Housing Issues

  • On March 20, 2020, the Governor issued an executive order that stops evictions in Michigan during the coronavirus crises. With limited exceptions, courts are required to stay (not act upon) evictions until after April 17, 2020.

  • On March 18, 2020, the Governor issue an executive order that extends the deadline to redeem homes foreclosed for unpaid taxes to, whichever is longer: May 29 or 30 days after the Governor’s declaration of the termination of the state of emergency that she declared in the state.


WATER ISSUES

  • On March 9, the Michigan’s Governor and Detroit’s Mayor announced a plan to reconnect water service to homes that had experienced shutoffs during the previous months.

  • If you have had your water shut off in the Detroit, you are likely eligible for reconnection at this time. To reconnect, CALL the Wayne Community Metropolitan Action Agency at 313-386-8727.

    • There is a $25 reconnection fee, however for Detroiters who make that call by April 9, the State will cover the $25 reconnection fee.

    • After reconnection, there will be a $25 monthly fee.

  • On March 29, the Governor direct that water service be restored to residences where water had been shut off in all other communities in the state. Contact your local water department to be reconnected.

  • At this time, Consumers Energy and DTE have voluntarily suspended energy shutoffs in Michigan.

  • Contact your elected officials and urge them to adopt binding legislation and/or executive orders banning all utility shutoffs (e.g. electrical, gas, broadband service, phones, etc.) during the coronavirus crisis.
